Acknowledgement
By Mickey Skidmore, AMHSW, ACSW, MACSW
I would like to begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land and waters that we are on today recognising this enduring relationship throughout the centuries. I also wish to convey my view that the purpose of this (hypocritical) custom is more about making white people feel better about themselves rather than the pretence of respectful acknowledgement to Aboriginal people.
Thus, I wish to pay my respect to elders past, present and emerging by stating what many will not — that this custom is a remnant of colonialism and a constant reminder of the grave and tragic injustice that has been inflicted by a racist empire built on stolen lives, land and wealth of colonised peoples for hundred of years that continues to adversely impact indigenous cultures.
In general, I find many typical acknowledgements to be confronting … disturbing … and frankly offensive. It is my hope that this acknowledgement enhances increased power an agency underscored in genuiness rather than posturing.
